Mac Miller Talks Working With Pharrell, Gold Record

Mac chops it up about his first gold record and what it was like to hit the studio with Skateboard P.

AllHipHop recently caught up with Mac Miller to discuss yesterday's news that his single "Donald Trump" from Best Day Ever went gold. The Pittsburgh rapper talked about the excitement he felt when he heard that his 2011 song passed the 500,000 sales mark. At the same time, he said the achievement is one small step in his career, and that he isn't going to let up on his music anytime soon.

"It's dope, man - a gold record, that's just an accomplishment," he explained. "I just happy that [the record] was able to go that far, and I'm just looking to build on that and keep growing, and hopefully have more gold records, maybe some platinum ones…it's definitely crazy to see where I was at a year ago and see where I am now, but at the same time, this is what I've dedicated my life to. I wouldn't settle for anything less, [and] I'm not even settling for this now…at the end of the day, this is nothing. I'm just working on building for the next step and to keep growing and take things to the next level."

Mac also revealed that he recently linked up with Pharrell to record a number of songs. He said that while he isn't sure where the tracks that the two made together will end up, he enjoyed the hands-on approach to the recording Skateboard P takes, saying that he even prefers building a song from scratch as opposed to receiving beats via email.

"I did like, two crazy jams with Pharrell," he revealed. "It was dope. He's real good peoples, and I just came in there and we were just vibing. I like making songs from scratch with people. I'm not a big 'send me a beat type guy.' We came up with some real cool shit, and we did two joints…he raps on one, and on there other he just did the beat."

Rick Ross Sued By Nigerian State For Cancelled Concert

Rick Rozay finds himself in legal hot water after he bailed on a festival performance in Nigeria's Cross River State.

Rick Ross may not forgive, but apparently the government of Nigeria's Cross River State doesn't either. The Bawse was recently slapped with a lawsuit by the Nigerian state's government for canceling a performance date at the Calabar Festival and failing to reimburse the performance fees.

According to a recent article from InformationNigeria.org, Rick Rozay abruptly cancelled his performance at this year's Calabar Festival, a nearly month-long music festival funded by the Cross River State government. In addition to failing to notify the concert organizers of his intention to cancel his performance, the Miami rapper has failed to reimburse them for his performance fees, which he had already cashed.

In response, the Cross River State government has hired lawyers within the United States to sue the rapper for breach of contract. An official statement was released by the government this past Wednesday via BlackBerry Messenger.

C-Murder's Murder Conviction & Life Sentence Upheld In Appeals Court

The rapper, whose real name is Corey Miller, was denied exoneration by Louisiana court.

After rapper C-Murder filed an appeal in October, a Louisiana appeals court has upheld his murder conviction and life sentence.

C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, faced a panel yesterday (Dec. 28th) to convince three judges that he did not get a fair trial for allegedly murdering a teenager in 2002. He cited “prejudicial and unsubstantiated testimony that he threated witnesses to the shooting” and blamed prosecutors for eliminating black people from the jury. The 5th Circuit rejected those arguments.

He was originally convicted in 2009 of second-degree murder in the shooting of 16-year-old Steve Thomas at a nightclub.

Jay-Z Sued By Workers Compensation Board Of New York

Hov is under fire for allegedly failing to pay worker's comp.

Jay-Z's legal troubles continue, as the Brooklyn emcee has been sued by the Workers Compensation Board of New York.

TMZ.com reports that the suit alleges that Jay failed to pay worker's compensation insurance for three months in 2009.

The insurance, which was supposed to cover domestic employees in the emcee's home, was allegedly properly paid after the three months.

The Workers Compensation Board sued Jay-Z for $18,000 in fines, though sources reportedly say that the figure is the result of a clerical error.

Joe Budden Says He's No Longer Releasing His "Feature Presentation" Project

Despite securing verses from Emilio Rojas, Phonte, and other artists Joe Budden cancels his "Feature Presentation" project.

Months after Joe Budden announced that he’d be releasing a mixtape featuring a who’s who of Hip Hop artists including Phonte and Yelawolf, the Jersey rapper has revealed that he no longer has plans on releasing the project which was to be titled Feature Presentation.

Joe Budden broke the news during an interview with AllHipHop.com when he was asked for an update onFeature Presentation.

“I’ll be honest with you… I’m not sure if I’m gonna put that project out,” Joe Budden explained to AllHipHop.com. “It was a project that I originally wanted to do for the fans because I was extremely passionate and I wanted to reach out to all of these great artists and work with them because I don’t typically have too many features at all.”

Ironically, when asked why he chose to cancel the project Joe Budden explained that the biggest problem was the hassle that came with securing featured verses for the mixtape.

“So once I started to do it I remembered why I don’t have too many features. I don’t really have the time with Slaughterhouse and everything happening to chase people for verses or be consistent in trying to get verses from people,” said Joe Budden. “So if it’s not I call you, tell you what I’m doing, and you’re [willing to oblige] and just do a verse and send it. I can’t really chase too many people…A few people actually did send in verses for songs. Z’ro sent in two or three of them. Blu, Elzhi, Phonte, Yela, Emilio Rojas but I am gonna still do these songs and release them. I’m just not certain what project that will be.”

AZ Updates On "Doe Or Die 2," Speaks On Nas Collaboration

This past August, Nas tweeted a photo of him and AZ together in the studio, fueling speculation that the two could be working on his upcoming album Life is Good. “He just working. Something might come out of it, you know how it go, you know? We politicin’,” he said.

AZ is also currently working on his upcoming album Doe or Die 2. The Firm member revealed that the project is still being recorded, but that he hopes to drop the LP in the second quarter of 2012.

“I’m trying to put that Doe or Die 2 together, get that done. Hopefully I’ll have that out second quarter of the year, 2012,” he said.

Mobb Deep Speaks On Creative Process, Independent Artists

Prodigy and Havoc explain how they can still work together after so many years on the grind.

Mobb Deep recently spoke with Muve Music about their recent Black Cocaine EP and creative process, explaining that the limited edition EP was meant as an appetizer for their upcoming album, due in February. During the interview, Havoc reflected on their creative process and how their long history allows them to comfortably work with one another.

“The creative process between me and P, it varies. Sometimes, he’ll be in the studio by himself or I’ll be in the studio by myself,” said Hav. “But the good thing is that we come together with it. We’ve known each other for so many years that it’s second nature for us. We don’t even have to be in the same place at the same time. But most of the time, we in the same place and we’ll sit down and he might write a verse and he’ll ask me what I think about this verse and I’ll write one. It’s real collaborative.”

The duo also spoke on independent artists, giving props to those who function without the backing of a major label. “Independent artists, we’ve definitely got love for them. We feel their pain, they gotta come up. Good luck to all of them,” said Prodigy.

Havoc added, “Also I think independent artists are foundation to the music right now, because you get all of this commercial music and you hear it a million times a day. But independent artists are the real ones who are really expressing themselves. So those are the people you really have to look out for.”

Damian Marley Speaks On Possibility Of Second "Distant Relatives" Album

The reggae star also touches on the importance that the 2010 release had to Africa.

Damian Marley and Nas teamed up last year for their first collaborative album Distant Relatives, touring together since last year. But now that the tour is a wrap, the reggae artist says that there are no immediate plans to continue the project and hopes that they’ll be able to one day make a sequel.

“For a while. This will be the last we’re doing in America for a while,” he told Longhorn Hip Hop, shifting to the prospect of a follow-up LP. “That would be nice. Hopefully.”

He also spoke on the reaction he got from African listeners. Though the two never made it to the continent to perform, he says that it’s helped to form a bridge between the western hemisphere and Africa.

“Yes. Well I want to tell you that one of the things that’s left to do with this project is go to Africa and perform. But most of the people we’ve spoken to so far, yes, I embrace it as a great idea. I think it helps to strengthen the bridge between the western hemisphere and Africa.”

Meek Mill Talks First Rap Battle, "Dream Chasers"

The MMG rapper talks about his first rap battle at the age of 12 and his recent mixtape "Dream Chasers."

Reebok Classic recently caught up with Maybach Music Group's Meek Mill to talk about his career so far and recent work with Rick Ross and the MMG crew. Meek talked about what propelled him into his rap career and why he's pursued it. He recalled that he first began rapping at the age of 12, and although his early start led him to losing a number of rap battles, his competitive spirit made stick with it.

"I've always been a [competitive] person. When I was about 12, I battled some guy who was like, 14," he explained. "He ate me up in a battle and everybody was laughing, so I just wanted to let people know I could do this if I wanted to."

Meek also talked about his latest mixtape Dream Chasers and the process that went into making it. He explained that he viewed the project as a cohesive LP that features a wide variety of track"s. At the same time, the Philly rapper explained that he also realizes that there is a notable difference in the amount of time that an artist must put into an album versus a mixtape.

"If you listen to Dream Chasers, I tried to do it like an album," he explained. "It has some heart-felt songs, some that can touch the club, some grimy, some south-hitting beats, some story telling. I try to make it as if it is an album, but I might be on a few other peoples' beats and I ain't gonna take as much time [on it] as I would on an album, and when I do do my album, I'm going to try and make my album as like a top-of-the-line mixtape."

Nas Reflects On It Was Written

Esco’s It Was Written turned 15 years old back in July. And in a recent interview with XXL, he reflects on his sophomore album.

What was your inspiration for “I Gave You Power?”
A Premier beat. Just a beat from Premier… in the studio. Back then I was around a lot more guns and my reality was that. There was no armed security back then, it was just us moving around so that was a lot more in my world.

I remember you had “Silent Murder” on the cassette. What made you put a bonus track on cassette at a time where things were moving to CDs?
Well, the cassette still wasn’t dead. They was still sellin’, so we figured, the cassette is what we grew up on. CDs is takin’ over so we need an extra attraction to get people to not buy the CDs, and also try to keep the cassette alive. We needed something to help keep the cassette alive so that’s what we did with Stretch and that was his last works, that was his last works with me. I miss him. I do. I think about him from time to time. Great dude. He was a real good dude.

I still got my cassette. Read the entire article here.

Maybach Music Group Rapper Pill Airs Out Label Frustrations On Twitter

Maybach Music Group Rapper Pill Airs Out Label Frustrations On Twitter

Atlanta rhyme peddler Pill forged a solid lane for himself after his gritty underground smash hit “Trap Goin' Ham”blazed the Web and speakers for the better part of 2009. After releasing four acclaimed mixtapes and inking a deal with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group imprint (which is distributed by Warner Bros. Records), the self-proclaimed “trap rapper” vented some frustrations regarding his career via his Twitter account (@Pill4180) earlier today.

“No TV and No Radio.. U do the math,” tweeted Pill. Pill continued his tirade with, “I bet u can name you favorite artist and the turn on the tv and see the video and hear it on the radio. It's not rocket science. Radio and TV b4 I had a deal, none after and u ask why Pill ain't blew all the way up.”

Pill signed with Ross back in February and it was anticipated that the southern mainstay's steady work and growing following would ensure stardom. Instead, MMG compatriots Wale and Meek Mill have dominated the charts, becoming the faces of the label–a point that Pill alludes to via his impassioned tweets.

“Artist sign deals, label doesnt do sh-- for them or don't even know to work the artist. time wasted,” added Pill. “Ask Wiz Khalifa what Warner Bros did for him. I'll wait..dropped em. Atlantic signed em put em on TV and Radio and he sky rocketed,” Pill tweeted further.

Pill, who recently had to fight off rumors that he was dropped from MMG, continued to rage on by rattling off some of his accomplishments, including his heavy tour schedule both in the States and overseas and naming various media outlets that covered his work. He also retweeted supportive words from fans, encouraging the rapper to continue on his path and saying fame will come in time.

Pill ended his Twitter rant succinctly with, “I shall remain true.”
