The legendary emcee and beatmaker says he's been waiting fourteen years for someone to jump on the Curtis Mayfield sample.
"First I want to say 'rest in peace' to Curtis Mayfield," Pete Rock told Vibe. "To reuse something that inspired us as kids--a song that my mom and dad listened to almost every other day is a great feeling."
Rock revealed on Thursday that he produced "The Joy" almost fourteen years ago. "I had to bring that back and reintroduce it to the young generation. I want to say big-up to Kanye West and Jay-Z for getting on that beat. I actually had that beat since 1997. I've been sitting on it for years."
"The Joy" will not appear on Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which releases on Nov. 22, but Pete Rock did express his hopes to work with Kanye again in the future.
