The 2013 BET Awards was going to be a nice showcase for Drake. The Toronto emcee was nominated for a whopping 12 awards and executives were banking on his star power to help boost ratings, but he called the morning of the event to say he wouldn't be showing up.
According to RadarOnline, producers were left scrambling trying to figure out what to do.
“Everything is in flux,” a source said. “The producers are all pulling their hair out.”
Drake posted a message on his Twitter account that said he was staying home to work on his forthcoming third studio album, Nothing Was the Same.
Despite his excuse, many are speculating that the OVO boss simply didn't want to be in the same venue as Chris Brown, who performed during Sunday's show. Breezy and Drake have been feuding ever since a June 2012 bottle throwing brawl between their camps at a New York City club.
Drake recently spoke to GQ about their beef and predicted it might end on a really bad note.
“I don’t want my name to be synonymous with that guy’s name. I really don’t,” Drake told the publication. “I wish we could sit down, just like you and me are right now, and talk it out man-to-man. But that’s not going to happen. I’m not confrontational, but if someone challenges, I’m not going to back down. It’s embarrassing, the amount of media coverage. Two rappers fighting over the woman. He’s not even a rapper, but still, it’s the last way you want your name out there. It distracts from the music. But he’s made me the enemy, and that’s the way it’s gonna stay, I guess. …If I think about it too much, I feel it wrapping around my foot, like I get a feeling it could end really badly.”
The Young Money rapper's presence was still felt at the awards despite him not being their. He won three trophies for Video of the Year and Viewers' Choice for "Started From the Bottom" and Best Collaboration for A$AP Rocky's "F*ckin Problems,"
