The 86th Academy Awards are just over a month away, and today begins the annual stir, as the public receives the list of nominees. As expected, highly lauded films like 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Gravity are among the top of the crop.
12 Years a Slave received a whopping nine nominations, including the coveted Best Picture award. The film's director, Steve McQueen, is nominated for Best Director, while Chiwetel Ejiofor, who starred as Solomon Northup, received a Best Actor nom. Current favorite Lupita Nyong'o may win Best Supporting Actress for her riveting role as "Patsey."
Other big Best Actor nominees include Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, and Christian Bale. Best Actress could go to Sandra Bullock, Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, or Meryl Streep.
On a more controversial note, films like Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, The Butler, and Fruitvale Station were omitted from this year's nominees, which should strike a lot of conversation.
