Drake Says He "Dropped The Ball" On Phonte Collaboration
Drizzy opens up about what happened to his and Phonte's rumored collab and takes the blame for it not happening.
This past August, Little Brother alum Phonte aired out his grievances with The Source over Drake snubbing him a promised guest verse on a record that was likely slated for Tay and producer/fellow Little Brother architect 9th Wonder's Charity Starts At Home. Now, in a recent interview with the Village Voice, Drizzy opens up about what happened to the long-awaited reunion between him and his favorite rapper.
Drake took 100% of the blame for dropping the ball on their collaboration. He explained that he was trying to find the right sound for his own recently leaked sophomore LP Take Care, and that the record ultimately fell through the cracks. Drake did say that while the collaboration didn't happen this time around, he's already been in talks with 9th Wonder about making it happen in the future.
"With me and [Phonte], I kinda dropped the ball on a feature he needed me to do, just being 100% honest," he explained. "I really wanted to do a record with him, and we actually did do a record for my album, and then something happened with the producer and the beat, and it started getting funny so I had to scrap the record. And then he was like, 'Well, can you do this feature for me,' and at the time I was trying to find my sound and trying to figure out what this album was going to be about, and I kind of let it slip through the cracks. That was my fault, and I do apologize to Phonte for that. But I still want to make it happen; I talked to 9th Wonder about trying to make it happen, we'll get it eventually. He knows he's one of the biggest influences on my career."
