Common Says He Overcame "Low Point" To Record "The Dreamer, The Believer"

Lonnie explains how No I.D. pulled him out of his funk.

Common may seem in good spirits following the release of his ninth album The Dreamer, The Believer, but he had to overcome some emotional obstacles to record it. During an interview with KEPR CBS 19, the Chicago, Illinois rapper said that he wasn’t inspired for the project.

"I hadn't figured out what I was going to do, what label I was going to work with," said Com, who split with Universal Music following the release of 2008’s Universal Mind Control. "I wasn't inspired."

Com says that he credits No I.D., who produced the entirety of the album, for helping him overcome his emotional low.

"He was willing to be like, `Yo, let's go! Let's get it. Let's go get on this hip-hop,"' he said. "So I think that meant a lot to me and from there we just continued to grow."
